Why Running Ads Yourself Rarely Works for Service Businesses

The specific reasons owner-managed ad campaigns underperform — and what managed campaigns do differently.

You've run Google Ads yourself. Maybe it produced some results, maybe it didn't. If it didn't, the cause is almost always one of five specific problems — none of which have to do with the platform, and all of which are solved by consistent professional management.

Problem 1: Keyword targeting too broad

Broad match keywords show your ads to searches that are not relevant to your service. "Plumber" as a broad match keyword will show your ad to searches for "plumber salary," "become a plumber," and "plumber Toronto" (if you're in Calgary). A well-managed campaign has tight phrase and exact match keywords with comprehensive negative keyword lists.

Problem 2: Landing page misalignment

Ads work best when the keyword, the ad copy, and the landing page are tightly aligned in message. If someone searches "emergency HVAC repair" and your ad takes them to your homepage, the mismatch reduces Quality Score and conversion rate simultaneously. A professional campaign creates ad groups with specific landing pages matched to specific intent.

Problem 3: No conversion tracking

Without call tracking and form submission tracking, Google's algorithm has no signal to optimize for. It optimizes for clicks — which is not the same as bookings. Proper conversion tracking lets the algorithm bid more aggressively for searches that have historically produced bookings, and less for those that haven't.

Problem 4: Not enough run time to optimize

A campaign needs 4–6 weeks of data before optimization decisions are reliable. Most owner-managed campaigns are adjusted too early (after 2 weeks) or too late (after 3 months of wasted spend). The optimization cadence of a professionally managed campaign is calibrated to the data maturity of each campaign phase.
