What Your Competitor's Website Is Doing That Yours Isn't

A practical audit of the specific elements on high-converting competitor sites — and how to identify the gaps in your own.

If a competitor in your city seems to be getting more inbound leads despite similar reviews and pricing, the answer is often sitting on their website. Here's how to audit the gap in 15 minutes.

Check their mobile experience

Open their website on your phone. Does it load in under 3 seconds? Is the phone number a tap-to-call link in the header? Can you find the contact form in under 5 seconds? If yes to all three, and your website fails any of these, that's a direct conversion disadvantage.

Count their social proof signals

How many reviews are displayed? Are they real Google reviews or generic testimonials? Do they have photos of actual job sites and real customers? Social proof density — the sheer amount of visible evidence that other people have trusted this business — is a major factor in conversion rate.

Look at their headline and above-the-fold content

What does the top of their homepage say? If they're leading with a clear service + city + specific outcome statement and your homepage leads with your company name and a vague tagline, that's a significant copywriting gap that affects every visitor who compares you.

Check if they have a fast, specific CTA

A "Get a Free Quote" or "Call Now — Same Day Service" button in a prominent color above the fold pulls calls that a generic "Contact Us" buried in the nav never will. This is one of the highest-leverage one-line changes on any service business website.
